MR Luka Ikpi, Oyo State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), said 36 people died in the state from road traffic crashes in October.
Ikpi made this known to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Ibadan.
He said that a total of 28 accidents occurred during the period and that among the victims were 15 male adults, 13 female adults, two male children and six female children.
“Apart from the dead, 115 people sustained various degrees of injuries,” he said.
He added that the crashes involved 42 commercial vehicles, 11 private cars and two government vehicles.
The FRSC boss also disclosed that 2,648 persons were arrested for different road traffic offences in the month of October in Oyo State.
“We arrested 960 motorcyclists for not using their crash helmets; 500 persons for seat belt violation and 31 people for making use of their mobile telephones while driving,” he said.
He, however, observed that impatience, recklessness and over-speeding were part of factors largely responsible for motor accidents.
He appealed to drivers to be more careful, especially during the ember months when the volume of traffic was usually high.
“We should give consideration to other road users and there shouldn’t be any reason to claim undue rights while behind the wheels,” he said. (NAN)
